the results are in... the slam is over...
the big slam is over.
on stage tonight were some of the best: bluz; versis; da minister; lashaun "phoenix" moore; will evans; local slammer will lanford; alvin lau; and little ol' me. sacrificing was logic. hosting was scott woods, the president of poetry slam, inc.
it was a hot slam, and everyone performed at a consistently high level, and the audience was eating it up the whole night. the only shame was that the judges were a bit slow to feel the energy of the night.
the slam was four rounds with the first two being cumulative. we drew for order in the first round, then the second round went highest score to the lowest score from the first round. after that, the two lowest scoring poets got dropped.
the third round was drawn for order, and the slate was cleared. after everyone was scored, the lowest two were dropped.
the fourth and final round was drawn for order and another clean slate, and the top scorer got $800. second place got $400. third and fourth got a handshake and a thank you.
i drew the eight in the first round, and ended up nailing the second highest score of the first round. i was the only one to do straight up comedy, and the audience went nuts.
however, there were three 30s in the first round, so i came in fourth in the first round out of eight, which ended up being great because the order in the second round went from highest to lowest, which meant i went fourth rather than second, which is nice.
in the second round, i got the third lowest score, which was JUST enough to prevent being cut. i did a good job, but everyone else did, too. we lost alvin lau and will evans, who both totally got score-creeped out of the competition. they both were great, but the scores in the beginning were hella low.
so, i drew the three for the third round and got a really good score, the highest up to that point, which secured my position in the final round. there were more 30s. the performances were off the hook.
we lost lashaun "phoenix" moore and local slammer will lanford.
the fourth round was in this order: versis; me; bluz; and da minister.
i came in third, just short of the $400 second place prize. versis came in second. da minister won with another 30. bluz took fourth, just a tenth of a point behind me.
wow.
i felt really good about how i did. several poets came up to me and mentioned how they had never seen me slam before, and they were very gracious and supportive, and that really, really felt good.
that was fun. i am looking forward to the next time. i just might try for a spot at IWPS in december.
here are the poems i did: napoleon; muscleman; poetry widow; and propers.
